There is a book that has sat quietly on the shelves of believers, leaders, and thinkers for over 120 years. It is short — barely 60 pages. It does not quote scripture directly. It was written by a man who stepped away from corporate life in 1902 to live simply and write in the English countryside. And yet — As a Man Thinketh by James Allen may be one of the most biblical books never written as a Bible study.
At Tru Bible Quiz (TruBibleQuiz.com), we believe that growing in faith means more than just knowing the right answers. It means renewing your mind daily — and that is exactly what James Allen was writing about, even if he did not know it.
That single verse from Proverbs is where the entire book gets its name. And from that foundation, James Allen built a philosophy that aligns — sometimes word for word — with the teachings of Jesus, Paul, and the Psalms. Let us walk through what this classic taught me about faith, and what it can teach you too.
"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path."— Psalm 119:105
Your Thoughts Become Your Reality
James Allen's central argument is simple: what you think about, you bring about. Your character, your circumstances, and even your health are the outward expression of your inner thought life. He wrote that a person cannot directly choose their circumstances — but they can choose their thoughts, and in so doing, shape their life.
The Bible said this first. Long before Allen ever picked up his pen, God told Joshua: "Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful." What you meditate on matters. What fills your mind fills your life.
The Mind Is a Garden — What Are You Growing?
One of the most powerful images in As a Man Thinketh is the mind as a garden. Allen writes that the mind is like a garden which may be intelligently cultivated or allowed to run wild. If you plant nothing intentionally, weeds will grow automatically. But if you tend your garden — pull the weeds of fear, doubt, and bitterness — and plant seeds of faith, hope, and gratitude, you will harvest a life of peace and abundance.
Jesus used this exact same imagery. The Parable of the Sower in Matthew 13 describes four types of ground — four types of hearts — and how the same seed (God's Word) produces vastly different results depending on what kind of soil receives it. Your mind is the soil. What are you letting grow in it?

This was the hardest lesson in the book for me — and the most freeing. Allen writes that suffering is not something that happens TO us arbitrarily. It is often the natural consequence of thoughts and habits we have allowed to take root. More than that — suffering is often the very tool that refines us and forces us to grow into who we are meant to be.
Romans 5 says it plainly: "We also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; perseverance, character; and character, hope." God does not waste our pain. He uses every hard season to shape, strengthen, and prepare us for the next chapter He has written for our lives.
Purpose Is the Antidote to Aimlessness
Allen makes a striking observation: a person without a central purpose in life falls an easy prey to petty worries, fears, troubles, and self-pityings. He urges readers to conceive a legitimate purpose in the heart and to set out to accomplish it.
The Bible confirms this with power. Proverbs 29:18 says, "Where there is no vision, the people perish." God created you on purpose and for a purpose. Living without that sense of divine calling leaves a person spiritually adrift. But when you align your purpose with God's Word — when you ask not just what you want but what you were made for — everything shifts.

Serenity Is the Crown of Self-Mastery
The final chapter of As a Man Thinketh is called "Serenity" — and it is breathtaking. Allen writes that calmness of mind is one of the beautiful jewels of wisdom. A person who has learned to master their own thoughts achieves a peace that cannot be shaken by circumstance, opinion, or opposition.
The Apostle Paul described this same supernatural peace in Philippians 4:7 — a peace that passes all understanding. This is not the peace the world gives, which is temporary and fragile. This is the peace of a mind stayed on God. Of a heart rooted deeply in the Word. Of a believer who has done the inner work of renewing their mind, one thought at a time.
"Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind."— Romans 12:2
What This Means for Your Faith Journey
James Allen was not a theologian. He never claimed to write a Christian book. But in many ways, As a Man Thinketh is one of the most powerful illustrations of Romans 12:2 ever put to paper. The call to renew your mind — to think differently, to think biblically, to think intentionally — is at the very core of the Christian walk.
At Tru Bible Quiz, we believe that knowing the Word of God is the foundation of everything. When you fill your mind with scripture — when you quiz yourself on the promises, the stories, and the teachings of the Bible — you are literally renewing your mind. You are planting seeds in good soil. You are cultivating your garden.
